2022 Update
Hello Everyone!
I am thrilled to share that the club remains in excellent shape, and our future prospects are as strong as ever. Below you will find a summary of the club's activity and accomplishments thus far this year.
MEETINGS:
Since the start of the year, ABC has continued to hold weekly meetings where we discuss business and current events. We have had consistent, solid attendance: on top of our eight-person board, our meetings also tend to attract around a dozen non-board-members.
Some of our topics this year have included:
- Our upcoming venture
- Joint meeting with Student Advocates for Climate Awareness (SACA) discussing whether or not the business community will be able to innovate our way out of climate change
- Facebook's big bet on the Metaverse
- Electric vehicles, and whether Telsa's $1 trillion market cap is sustainable
- The business of Nuclear energy (and potential innovation in the space)
- Potential venture collaboration with PA Coffee Club (guess what we were going to sell?)
- The gig economy
- Business ethics: should businesses pursue profit, social impact, or both?
CLUB CONSTITUTION:
One of our board members, Marc Vidal '23, authored a "club constitution" that outlines our club's governance structure. Notably, the constitution declares that ABC will always be led by two Co-Presidents and a Vice President –– cementing a tradition that has endured for several years as a safeguard against leadership conflict.
The constitution can be accessed here (Hyperlink).
BOARD APPLICATIONS:
ABC sent out the following board application in early February (Hyperlink). As ABC has done in previous years, we have incorporated a fair amount of humor into the application, though for the first time, we have also added a question related to social impact.
We intend to select two Co-Presidents, a Vice President, and 5-10 total board members.
UPCOMING VENTURE:
Sometime in late February or March, ABC plans to sell Girl Scout Cookies. Earlier in the term, we learned from a faculty member that the local girl scout troop had excess inventory that they were looking to sell. After concluding that there is extremely strong demand for girl scout cookies on campus, we purchased $500 worth of cookies for $5/box (60 boxes of Thin Mints, 40 boxes of Caramel Delites).
On top of this inital $500 contribution, we will contribute all additional net proceeds from this sale to the local Girl Scout troop; based on our current plan, these could total an additional $1-2 per box.
Our full plan for this venture can be accessed here (Hyperlink).
In the next few weeks, the current co-Presidents will select ABC's senior leadership for FY2022, and the current board will also select next year's Associate board. The new masthead will be accessible on the blog's "Leadership" page (Hyperlink).
As always, feel free to follow us on Instagram (@andoverbusinessclub) for more updates.
Best,
The Board
